Wednesday, April 20th 6PM: Mirza will be performing a Bedouin/Lebanese suite (including jug dance!) at Bunker Hill Community College.  The event is on the main campus in the main building in the "D" section.

Center for Arabic Culture

April 9th, 2011: Mirza will be performing as part of the Center for Arabic Culture open house.  This event will take place at the beautiful Somerville armory at 191 Highland St.  This is an open house for the center and is open to the public.  There will be an Arabic Orchestra, Raks Sharki dancer from NY, Mirza Dance Ensemble, Henna, Middle East appetizers and other goodies too!  More details to follow here: h

Lunenburg High

April 7, 6-10PM: FREE EVENT: The Mirza Dance Ensemble will be performing a suite on at Lunenburn High School Multicultural Festival. 

Once again, Lunenburg Public Schools are planning their Multicultural Festival.  This year’s theme is “Many Roots, Many Branches”.  The festival will be held Thursday, April 7, 2011, at the Lunenburg High School from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.  The purpose is to celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity through music, art, dance, drama, crafts, cultural exhibits, and educational displays.
The Lunenburg Multicultural Festival, an event that celebrates our diverse backgrounds and interests, is free to the public and offers activities, performances, and displays for the whole family.  Also featuring: Bay State Wheelers and the Center for Living & Working, Inc, Flying Irish Dancers: Haruo Shiga, Malik the Magic Guy, Dianne Tousignant, Donna Leon, and There Is No Try.

Bridge Center offers swimming, horseback riding, music, basketball,
dance, soccer, drama, cooking, archery, nature walks, arts & crafts,
boating and fishing.

Through opportunities to make friends, share experiences, discover
abilities, and uncover talents, children and families of The Bridge
Center learn to trust themselves, to adapt to new situations, to respond
to challenges, and to take pride in their successes.

Mass Raqs 2010

Details: The Mirza Dance Ensemble will be performing a Bedouin style piece in MassRaqs: An Evening of Stars!
Our own Shadia will be teaching several workshops!

Shadia's Workshops:
  • Two Hands, Two Canes: Technique for Raqs Al Assaya (Cane Dance)
Instruction in this workshop will focus on the women’s cane dance emphasizing safe and correct ambidextrous twirling technique and progressing to two canes. Strong folkloric hip & torso movements will be broken down, drilled and then performed in a short piece.  Please bring two dowels 5/8” x3 or 4 feet in length. These are inexpensive and can be purchased at the Home Depot or local hardware store.  Some heavier decorated pairs for performance will be available for use and/or purchase.  Shadia will perform an impromptu cane piece at the end of the class. September 27th, 2010 12:30-1:30PM
  • Baalbekeya! Dances of the Levantine Bedouin

Bedouins throughout the Near East have their own distinct dialect, rhythms and dances, and the women especially demonstrate amazing agility in the torso and shoulder movements that are characteristic of the Levantine style.Movements will be broken down, drilled, put into combinations and then performed to a song.   A short Bedouin style debke (line dance) will also be taught followed by an impromptu dance by Shadia. A Taste of Peace in the Middle East--January 31 at Brookline High School--Films and artwork jointly created by Palestinian and Israeli teenagers will be on display at a special celebration and fundraiser for Artsbridge Institute on January 31 at Brookline High School. Middle Eastern dancing, music and cuisine will also be highlights of the evening devoted to honoring the beauty of Israeli and Palestinian cultures. "A Taste of Peace in the Middle East" will be the first fundraiser for Artsbridge, a program that brings Palestinian and Israeli teenagers from the Middle East to the Boston area for three weeks to work together on art projects, learn about each other and begin a healing dialogue. The event will include live musical groups, including Nabil Ata and his band, Amir Milstein and his musicians, "Hope Rising," as well as The Mirza Dance Ensemble. Middle Eastern delicacies will be served and there will also be silent and live auctions.
