 Her formal dance training was in ballet and she has also studied and performed dances of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Greece, Egypt , Lebanon and Ireland.

 As a professional dancer, she toured the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America with her late husband Ibrahim Maalouf as soloist with the Cedar’s Band and has been involved in Turkish, Lebanese, Egyptian and Armenian folk troupes.   Since 1975, she has been teaching all levels of the above dances. She and Ibrahim choreographed and created the Zar piece for Boston’s International Women’s Vocal & Music Ensemble, Libana.

In  2000 Shadia gave a workshop in NYC for Yosry’ Sharif’s weeklong seminar   featuring  her “Less is More” zill technique.  Her years of teaching in  Providence RI culminated in the forming of the Mirza Near East Folk Ensemble that presented Egyptian and Lebanese folkdances.  In 2002 they performed at Boston’s  Museum of Science’ Antiquities of Egypt Exhibit as well as numerous ethnic festivals and venues throughout New England.

For  six years she was costume designer and mistress for one of Boston’s favorite holiday traditions, the Urban Nutcracker.  She designs for ballroom, flamenco and ethnic dance.  Her passion is for costuming of Oriental/Belly Dance.  Her creations are sold at Great Eastern Trading Company , a vintage clothing store in Central Square, Cambridge, MA.  Currently she is artistic director & choreographer for the newly formed(2007)  twenty five member, folkloric dance troupe of the World Lebanese Cultural Union. Recently she  created the fourth generation of the Mirza Dance Ensemble, comprised of her advanced students that perform the folkloric dances of  the Levant and Egypt.   She has also taught Debke and Raks Sharqi at Boston University, Harvard University and MIT for Lebanese student associations.
